ABB India unveiled rare-earth-free IE5 motors and committed ₹140 crore to expand LV motor production, boosting efficiency and sustainability.

ABB India has introduced a new range of rare-earth-free IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motors and announced a ₹140 crore investment to expand and modernize its low-voltage motor manufacturing facility in India.

The IE5 series spans 45 kW to 1000 kW and delivers up to 40% lower energy losses versus IE3-class motors, cutting operational costs and emissions. Designed for both Direct-On-Line and Variable Frequency Drive operation, the motors target sectors such as metals, cement, textiles, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, and paper.

ABB’s design removes the need for rare-earth materials, addressing supply-chain risks and advancing sustainable manufacturing. Stefan Floeck, President of IEC Low Voltage Motors at ABB, said the investment reinforces India’s role as a global manufacturing hub, while Sanjeev Arora, President of Motion Business & IEC LV Motors, stressed the combination of proven induction technology with ultra-premium efficiency without rare-earth reliance.

The product launch alongside increased factory capacity aligns with India’s industrial decarbonization goals and ABB’s strategy to drive energy-efficient solutions across heavy industry.
